Community Essence Map

“The Stalled Handshake” In walking through the market and speaking with young online vendors, we observed a community that is hyperconnected digitally but economically disconnected by fear. We met “Mama Sarah,” a boutique owner who sources clothes from neighboring countries. She spends hours physically traveling to banks because she is terrified to send mobile money to suppliers she hasn’t met face-to-face. We also met “David,” a university student who mines Pi and does freelance design, but holds his wealth in volatile local currency because he cannot easily access stablecoins.

Key Observations & Patterns: • The “Pay on Delivery” Trap: Online sellers (Instagram/WhatsApp) are struggling because buyers refuse to pay upfront due to scam fears, but sellers are afraid to ship without payment. Commerce is gridlocked.

• The “Cash-Out” Anxiety: Freelancers receiving crypto have to go through 3-4 layers of “middlemen” to get cash, losing value at every step.

Digital Wealth, Real-World Poverty: Many youth have digital assets (Pi, small crypto balances) but cannot use them to buy bread or pay for transport.
